Why I Am Running

Carrie Smart For Oak Bay Council

Who I Am

Oak Bay is my home. It's where I live here with my supportive partner, Neil, and where we've chosen to raise our two enthusiastic teenagers. I’m an architect, climate leader, and neighbour who has worked alongside many of you to nurture our community. I’ve devoted the past decade to designing public spaces, daycares in which children can thrive, and rental buildings and missing middle housing that embrace principles of sustainability.

I believe that the climate crisis is one of the most urgent issues of our time, and that our endless creativity and deep passion for Oak Bay means we are poised to take meaningful action to address that crisis.

I’m a passionate volunteer – you may have met me on some of Oak Bay’s planning and climate action groups over the past few years, or while advocating for greater transit and safer routes to schools. I also sit on the board of directors for the not-for-profit, Dance Victoria, and have advocated for climate action through my roles as BC Chapter and Network Chair of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada.

With recognition to the First Peoples of our land, I am grateful to live and raise my family on Lekwungen territory. I give my personal and professional support and commitment to reconciliation.

Why I’m Running

I love Oak Bay, and believe in the power of local government to act on the will of its constituents. I represent a generation of Oak Bay citizens who want our community to be inclusive, climate ready, and welcoming of all who choose it.

Through my professional and volunteer work, I’ve facilitated groups with diverse opinions – I listen well, and help groups take decisive action that reflects their shared community values. I apply the lens of climate and social equity to my own decision-making and planning, and am committed to broad-based consultative processes that are rooted in principles of inclusion and reconciliation.

I believe I can ignite and lead Oak Bay’s commitment to housing diversity, climate-resilient neighbourhoods and the implementation of a vibrant village plan. I believe in growth that honours our heritage buildings and nurtures our green spaces.

My community advocacy, architectural background and ability to broker different perspectives will bring a smart, progressive and balanced voice to council.

Thanks for visiting my website. I look forward to chatting with you about the future of Oak Bay!
